Une pierre, un arbre, un nuage is freely inspired by the eponymous short story (A Tree, a Rock, a Cloud) by Carson McCullers. The story recounts the encounter between a young paperboy and an older man in a café. The boy enters to cool off when the man addresses him: “Do you know where a man should begin to love? A tree, a rock, a cloud.”

For Une pierre, un arbre, un nuage, I turn this statement into a memento. It takes the form of small messages, folded, secreted, and scattered throughout the city: on public benches, in the metro, mailboxes, windshields... The adage is as empty and full of meaning as those displayed in the bathrooms of cafés or beauty salons.
